Cape Cod

This summer for our beach vacation we ventured close to home. Instead of the outer Cape we chose to stay in Mashpee in a neighborhood called Popponessett that was walkable to the Nantucket Sound.

Friends Jon and Heather and their kids Ansel and Chloe were visiting from Indiana and stopped by for a night

We had beautiful weather and most nights we went to the beach after dinner in the early evening light

The water was mostly calm - perfect for our little swimmers

The house came equipped with toys and gear

Baby Tessie was just starting to crawl, and she stayed out of trouble the whole week.

Her new trick: pulling up

Aunt Katy, Uncle Brad, Lyla, and Charlie shared the week with us. Tessie had many little helpers.

Daily outings were part of the child entertainment package on this vacation. Our trip to Wood's Hole was highlighted by yummy fish tacos at Quick's Hole. The rest of that day's trip was a bust because the aquarium was closed and the afternoon traffic was awful.

Next up: Plimoth Plantation, where the 17th century comes alive.

In the Wampanoag village we learned that the Native Americans had a good life before the Pilgrims arrived

The kids loved the huts and longhouse

In the Pilgrim settlement the characters spoke and acted true to the period. We learned that the most important job for the children at that time was staying alive.

We couldn't pass up the colonial dress-up room

Our party split before seeing the restored Mayflower because one of the kids (take your guess) did not want to go near a real-live boat

The one rainy day we went to the local childrens museum and boy was it crowded

This is the two-room cottage where Dad, Aunt Katy, and Aunt Claire spent their vacations on Cape Cod

The surprise gem of a trip was to Heritage Gardens, which in addition to an antique car barn, had this great old carousel, gorgeous grounds and a fairy house building activity

and after the walk back everyone was plumb tuckered

A stop at Sweet Caroline's ice cream stand topped off the day

Aunt Claire, Uncle Peter, Sabrina, Brooke, and Rowan stopped by for an afternoon
