June visits and visitors

A couple of years ago I realized that if you don't take advantage of the fine weather in June, then July and August fly by and one wonders what happened to summer. This year we had every weekend in June booked and on top of end-of-school activities it was a busy month. Pictured here is Caroline at her recorder concert - can you hear the dulcet tones?

Caroline received a medal for her achievement in the 3rd grade Continental Math League competition organized by the before-school math team. In each of 3 tests, the top 6 scores from the class counted towards the competition and the class had enough perfect scores on all 3 tests to score an aggregate perfect 100% and be crowned National Champions. Way to go, Bowman bears!

Milestone for the 12 Taft Ave household, hosting its first sleepover party with Caroline's friend Chloe and Erin's friend Vivian.

Heather took the older girls to Atlanta and it happened to be the weekend where the church displayed flowers in memory of her brother Geoffrey.

This trip to Atlanta turned out to be nonstop fun for the girls - bouncing...

sliding...

 dolphin-watching...

...saying "open sesame"??

Caroline kept Dad up to date with nightly notes

do they still call it Hotlanta?

Meanwhile, back in Boston Dave took Tessie on a couple of excursions to collect DCR passport and Mass Audubon stamps - pictured here: Nahant Beach, a much preferable alternative to Revere Beach.

I do hope that this is the only ink that Tessie puts on her body

and it's never to early to learn about the lousy life of colonists thanks to the Blue Hills trailside museum

Heather's work-sponsored b-day cake

At home we had normal-sized cupcakes

I thought cats lacked functional sweet receptor taste buds

Friends from our grad school days invited us up to their vacation house in Ogunquit, Maine

It was walking distance from one of the rarest Maine sites, a public-access sandy beach

Our hostess Jane always outdoes herself with the food

Dave's W-and-M friends Keith and Grace met us downtown for dinner and a chance to hang out with Vincent and Drew

The kids played great together and were in full-on crazy mode for picture-taking.
Next W-and-M group vacation needs to be on the West Coast to include these guys

Heather's grad school roommate Sarah came to town for a conference

We all went to the DeCordova Sculpture Garden

Since this wasn't an exhibit, the kids could play in the teepee

Tom and Amy joined us for Heather's birthday dinner at Season to Taste, a new restaurant run by recent Top Chef alum Carl Dooley. We made the reservations 3 months in advance and it was a memorable meal.

Since Dave had to travel to Orlando for a conference, he drove out to Cape Canaveral to close the loop from our December trip to Florida, where we didn't make it to this Visitor Center.

Sweet land of liberty

Part one of Heather's birthday celebrations was a one-night stand at Great Wolf Lodge

Feedback is a gift

Part two of Heather's birthday celebration was a trip to Portland, Oregon with her college friends. Dave took the girls to NY to enjoy the Ehmann family dacha

Caroline graduated from fish catching to turtle catching

With Tessie in the care of Grandma Joan, we tackled the Statue of Liberty. Key to this expedition was taking the ferry from the New Jersey side, where there was free parking and no lines. We skipped Ellis Island and the Hall of Immigration.

Erin was fine on the big boat

On Liberty Island the NPS visitor center was tiny and overlooked by most visitors who waited in more lines to enter the pedestal or ascend to the crown.

We drove from NJ through the Holland Tunnel into lower Manhattan and past the new skyscraper and memorial at the World Trade Center. Miraculously we found a parking spot literally at the end of the road, directly across from Battery Park and Castle Clinton National Historic Park. Castle Clinton itself was kind of pathetic, with another tiny visitor center filled with some dated dioramas. Compared to boondoggles like Weir Farm, Steamtown, and the Carl Sandburg home, I'd say NYC isn't getting its share of the NPS pie.

A reward well-earned from braving the belly of the beast, ie visiting NYC tourist sites on a busy holiday weekend

Tessie of course had a wonderful day without her older sisters

Here's a big painted turtle that Caroline caught

Thar she blows
