Part one of Heather's birthday celebrations was a one-night stand at Great Wolf Lodge
Feedback is a gift
Part two of Heather's birthday celebration was a trip to Portland, Oregon with her college friends. Dave took the girls to NY to enjoy the Ehmann family dacha
Caroline graduated from fish catching to turtle catching
With Tessie in the care of Grandma Joan, we tackled the Statue of Liberty. Key to this expedition was taking the ferry from the New Jersey side, where there was free parking and no lines. We skipped Ellis Island and the Hall of Immigration.
Erin was fine on the big boat
On Liberty Island the NPS visitor center was tiny and overlooked by most visitors who waited in more lines to enter the pedestal or ascend to the crown.
We drove from NJ through the Holland Tunnel into lower Manhattan and past the new skyscraper and memorial at the World Trade Center. Miraculously we found a parking spot literally at the end of the road, directly across from Battery Park and Castle Clinton National Historic Park. Castle Clinton itself was kind of pathetic, with another tiny visitor center filled with some dated dioramas. Compared to boondoggles like Weir Farm, Steamtown, and the Carl Sandburg home, I'd say NYC isn't getting its share of the NPS pie.
A reward well-earned from braving the belly of the beast, ie visiting NYC tourist sites on a busy holiday weekend
Tessie of course had a wonderful day without her older sisters

Here's a big painted turtle that Caroline caught
Thar she blows
Trillion dollar view
Happy Tessie
