The Boston bombings, where were we? Grandma Joan & Grandpa Ed were in town to mind Caroline during the school vacation week. We had a great Patriot's Day weekend watching a parade and seeing our first colonial battle re-enactment. On Monday we were home and Grandpa was watching the marathon coverage live. Our cousin Doug had visited the evening before and was racing. We later learned that he finished about an hour before the bombs went off. Everybody at work and in our neighborhood knew someone who was downtown that day. We tried to shield the kids from it all and were successful until Friday morning, when we learned that both of our worksites were closed and we were under instructions to stay indoors. The manhunt area in Watertown was only 3 miles from our house, but it was a sunny day and we flouted the lockdown to let the kids play outside in the backyard. There were no SWAT teams on our street, but the sky was criss-crossed by helicopters. And then it was all over by Friday night, what a week.
We signed Caroline up for soccer this spring. The first practice was in early April at 8:30 in the morning and the temperature was in the 40s with a cold wind. She wore her winter coat and was miserable the entire time. The next week it warmed up and she had much more fun.
